We are in the summer season of the year 2022 and we are aware that according to estimates made by experts, summers will be increasingly hotter and, therefore, we must take greater measures to avoid problems in our health.
On the other hand, it is a fact that the elderly population requires special care on hot days, so here are four measures that should be taken into account for this purpose.
1. Use sun protection measures
Sunlight is necessary for humans because it provides vitamin D, which is needed at all stages of life, however, exposure should be light and during the early morning hours, experts recommend.
Although for some years now it has been promoted to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun's rays, especially between 10 am and 3 pm, as well as the use of sunscreen to prevent skin damage, there is still a long way to go to incorporate these habits into our lifestyles and, above all, when we decide to go on vacation during the summer.
It is important to take up this topic again, because the skin of the elderly person is very delicate because as the years go by, its thickness decreases and it loses elasticity (Geriatricarea, 2016), so it must be protected with a certified sunscreen, special hats and glasses that protect the eyes from ultraviolet rays.
2. Proper hydration
Maintaining adequate hydration is essential for the body to maintain its balance. And as is to be expected, on hot days our body loses hydration as we sweat more.
3. Consume fruits rich in water
There is nothing better than enjoying a refreshing fruit! One way to maintain the level of hydration we need is to consume water-rich fruits that complement our regular water intake. Some of these fruits are: watermelon, strawberry, pineapple, melon, among others.
4. Wear light clothing
We know that the choice of clothing depends largely on the season of the year in which we are located. And just as we must take precautions on rainy or windy days, we must do the same in the summer season.
Thus, the closet of older adults should have light and fresh clothing, as well as different garments that prevent direct exposure to the sun's rays, such as, for example, hats or special sleeves.
