Exploring Beauty in the Third Age

The third age, far from being a stage of decline, is presented as a time of fulfillment and self-discovery. In this period, beauty acquires new dimensions that go beyond conventional standards. In this regard, research from the University of Cambridge indicates that beauty in this stage of life is defined by wisdom, serenity and authenticity, reflecting the experience and knowledge accumulated over the years. In addition, several studies conducted by the National Center for Gerontology in the United States highlight the importance of self-acceptance and emotional connection in the perception of self-beauty in older adults.

Meanwhile, studies published by Stanford University incorporate an additional variable by suggesting that beauty in old age would also be related to physical and mental health, since it would reflect personal care and inner vitality. In this regard, research conducted by the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) indicates that society tends to underestimate beauty in the elderly, which can affect their self-esteem and emotional wellbeing, while these studies indicate that recognizing and valuing beauty in older adults would be fundamental to promote a positive image of aging and foster their psychosocial wellbeing.

In addition, studies by the American Psychological Association confirm that maintaining good personal hygiene and appearance would promote feelings of self-worth and self-confidence at this stage of life, which would also be supported by research conducted by Harvard University, which suggests that physical self-care and attention to appearance could counteract the negative effects of aging on the self-image and mental health of older adults.

Based on these findings, self-care would not only contribute to good physical health, but would also strengthen self-esteem and psychological well-being in old age, becoming an important variable in the integral health and care of the elderly.

While self-care is a very broad concept that encompasses the entire spectrum of actions and practices that a person performs to maintain their physical, emotional and social well-being, this blog will focus on those activities of daily living that contribute to physical and emotional well-being and are commonly associated with beauty.

From this particular approach, skin care would become an important aspect of maintaining a healthy appearance. According to the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), skin in the elderly requires specific products that deeply moisturize and stimulate collagen production, such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. In addition, it is essential to protect the skin from UV rays by daily use of sunscreen.

A balanced diet is another fundamental pillar in the quest for beauty in old age. According to Spain's National Institute of Health (INS), a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats will help keep skin smooth and luminous, as well as strengthen hair and nails.

With respect to hair, hairstyles and haircuts can enhance the natural beauty and personality of older adults. Consulting with stylists who specialize in this age group can provide options that suit individual needs and preferences, highlighting elegance and vitality.

Regular exercise not only benefits physical and mental health, but also contributes to maintaining a slim and toned figure that contributes to the energy and self-esteem of the older adult.

SPA visits are an excellent way to relax and rejuvenate. Hydrotherapy, massage and aromatherapy treatments provide moments of pleasure and personal care that help reduce stress and improve sleep quality. Manicures and pedicures are small details that make a difference in personal presentation. Well-groomed hands and feet convey neatness and elegance.

When it comes to fashion, seniors have left behind outdated stereotypes to embrace modern and comfortable trends. The key is to choose clothes that fit each individual's personality, lifestyle and identity.

Beauty in the elderly is a journey of self-discovery and personal care that each person lives and expresses in their own way. At Verdeza Senior Living we understand the importance of providing spaces and services that promote wellness, personal care and beauty for each and every one of our residents, allowing them to fully enjoy this golden stage of life.
