Discovering Senior Living in Costa Rica

Senior Living is a broad concept that can be explored from different angles, however, for the purposes of this blog we will define it as a residential model aimed at people over 65 years of age, who seek care and services with high standards of quality, luxury, comfort and facilities adapted to the needs of the elderly; all this without losing their independence and lifestyle. It is a concept that also encompasses a wide range of aspects ranging from health and wellness to social participation.

In this blog, we will explore this concept from a holistic perspective, based on academic research and input from specialized centers, as well as direct experience gained over the last 10 years at Verdeza Senior Living.

The current concept of Senior Living is significantly distinguished from any previous approach by its holistic approach. Unlike more traditional models of senior care, which often focused solely on medical or caregiving aspects, today's Senior Living recognizes the importance of addressing all dimensions of an older person's well-being.

For example, in Verdeza Senior Living we have implemented programs that encourage participation in recreational and social activities, thus promoting a sense of community and connection among residents. This integration of social and recreational activities not only improves residents' quality of life, but also contributes to their emotional and mental well-being, as studies published in the journal Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine (GGM) have shown.

In addition, Senior Living is characterized by its focus on personalization and choice. In contrast to previous models that offered a one-size-fits-all approach, modern Senior Living communities provide options and services tailored to each resident's individual needs. For example, programs such as Aging in Place allow residents to age in place where they feel most comfortable, with the support they need to maintain their autonomy. This flexibility and personalization in care reflect a shift toward a more person-centered model that seeks to empower older adults to make decisions about their own lifestyle and care. These practices are supported by research such as that published in the journal The Gerontologist, which highlights the importance of autonomy and choice in promoting well-being in old age.

At Verdeza Senior Living we are proud to be pioneers in Costa Rica by opening, a decade ago, the first Senior Living community in Costa Rica, and to be able to live hand in hand with our residents and staff the evolution of this wonderful concept.
