On the contrary, it is necessary to increase dental visits and daily actions to maintain the health of the teeth, as there are several negative factors to deal with, such as increased risk of cavities and plaque tends to form faster; in addition, people often experience a reduction in their motor skills and visual ability, which affects the daily care of their teeth (Dental care for older adults, 2021).
1. Proper handling of the prosthesis
It is very common that at this stage of life people have lost teeth and have a prosthesis to replace them and facilitate chewing. This prosthesis, if removable, should be removed and washed after eating and kept in a glass of water at night (Guide to Dental Care in Older Adults, 2021).
2. Proper brushing
Generally, it is recommended to use a soft bristle toothbrush 2 to 3 times a day, however, an oral health professional can suggest the appropriate toothbrush according to the characteristics of each older adult, for example, there are specialized brushes for cleaning dental prostheses.
Along with brushing, a dental floss or interdental brush should be used to remove any residue and mouthwash recommended by a specialist, since some rinses damage the enamel of the teeth.
3. Periodic review
It is recommended to visit the specialist every six months (unless a symptom requiring an emergency consultation is present) for a review of the oral health and follow-up of any pathology. It is also important for the older adult to receive a dental cleaning to remove plaque and to have fluoride applied.
