Socialization is the process by which a human being receives and shares information with his environment, especially about the rules of coexistence, customs and modes of communication in order to be able to relate effectively in society.
Socialization is important at any stage of life, but it takes on special significance in older adulthood. This age group is at greater risk of loneliness and isolation because they are exposed to physical and social changes associated with their stage of life. As people age, it is normal for their social circle to shrink. For this reason, it is essential to continue promoting the socialization of the elderly so that they can lead a healthy life physically, socially and emotionally.
The need to socialize with people who have the same interests, tastes and preferences is one of the objectives that senior living communities strive for in order to keep our residents integrated and healthy.
Recreation in the elderly can be seen as something that goes beyond the personal; rather, it is advisable that the institutions that work with this age group visualize recreation as a social action that contributes directly to the development of healthy and autonomous lifestyles (Calzado, Cortina and Muñoz, 2010).
There are various activities with which communities of older adults encourage the socialization of our residents. Below, we detail some actions, taking as a reference the research of Calzado, Cortina and Muñoz (2010):
- We promote creativity and aesthetic capacity through artistic activities.
- We encourage interpersonal contacts and social integration through recreational activities.
- We maintain the capacity for playful enjoyment and openness to new interests and activities.
- We contribute to the maintenance of the feeling of usefulness and personal self-esteem.
- We encourage communication, friendship and the establishment of different and varied interpersonal relationships.
In summary, socialization is an essential part of the integral health of older adults and is fundamental for maintaining an optimal state of mind during old age.
