The best gift that a senior citizen can receive this Christmas

Christmas is one of the most special times of the year because it is surrounded by an atmosphere of togetherness, celebration, good wishes and affection. Christmas is one of the festivities in which we most value sharing as a family because different generations tend to get together at home, from the elderly to the youngest.

In spite of the above, older adults are often not integrated into family activities. Rather, they tend to be the ones who are most often left out of certain household activities because there are several myths that associate them with bitterness and isolation. However, this is an erroneous view.

Contrary to popular belief, Christmas is usually a time of great emotional intensity for older adults as it is one of the times when they feel most part of the family because they are often visited by their loved ones. In addition, this period of the year usually evokes gratifying memories about moments of their past or even about people who accompanied them and are no longer with them.

For this reason, it is important that we promote the integration of our older adults in the different family and social activities that we are going to organize. The family as the closest circle of the elderly plays a fundamental role in improving their quality of life and well-being. It is the responsibility of all members of the household not to let isolation or loneliness hurt the elderly during this time of the year.

The best gift a senior can receive this Christmas is to feel integrated into the family's activities. Activities that mix the generations allow the older adults to feel appreciated and the younger ones to enjoy the treasured wisdom of the elders.

There are simple ideas that can be of great help to integrate older adults. For example, we can give them the space to tell their stories, which allows us to transmit to the new generations what the traditions of previous times were. Also, we can decorate the home together to achieve a Christmas atmosphere, as this is an activity that is pleasant for most seniors because it makes them feel active and appreciated. We can also involve them in the culinary preparations, since at Christmas celebrations we always eat together with our guests, among a variety of other activities.

Christmas is a celebration to enjoy as a family, to share human affection and to make our loved ones feel special. Let's remember to offer the elderly in our family our integration and affection.
