Four activities that seniors can do with their families during the month of the homeland

Costa Ricans are excited to celebrate another year of independence. It is a significant date in which we honor the beginning of our free and sovereign history with patriotic activities that unite us as a nation and increase our sense of belonging.

In the specific case of older adults, celebrating independence fills them with joy and pride because they have witnessed different events in which Costa Ricans have fought for the welfare of the inhabitants and the defense of the country. In addition, living the different activities allows them to express in different ways the love they profess for the homeland in which they were born, which they have promoted and wish to pass on to younger generations.

Following the line of activities allusive to the homeland that can be shared with older adults, here are four practices that should not be missed:

1. Decorating the house with patriotic motifs

Traditionally it has been customary to place flags or symbols alluding to the Independence of Costa Rica. In addition, lately the making of a patriotic corner has been promoted in which all members of the family use their creativity and patriotism. Another enriching activity is the making of lanterns from ingenuity (recyclable materials can be used).

2. Attend the parade on September 15.

Fortunately, after more than two years without these parades, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the student parades return to our streets. This is definitely an activity that fills Costa Ricans with enthusiasm and pride, as they watch the children and young people marching happily to the sound of music.

3. Sing Costa Rican hymns and traditional songs.

Costa Rica has a wide repertoire of traditional songs that reflect the folklore and values of the Costa Rican people, in addition to the hymns whose lyrics and music represent the identity of our country.

Reviewing them and singing them with respect and fervor allows us to learn how the Costa Ricans of yesteryear built what we are today and helps us to love our beloved Costa Rica even more. This is an activity that can involve all members of the family and allows the elders to transmit cultural knowledge and values to the younger generations.

4. Prepare a typical breakfast and/or lunch

It is no secret that the Costa Rican spoon is exquisite! So a special activity for the patriotic month is to elaborate a typical homemade menu and involve the family.

If they need support during this difficult time, at Verdeza we can provide them with a safe environment and social interaction activities. If for any reason, it is difficult for you to keep your family members at home, consider Verdeza as an excellent option.
