Cohousing: innovation in the care of older adults

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that by 2050, the world's population aged 60 years and older will double. Similarly, in Costa Rica, the population of older adults is experiencing a notable increase with an aging of 10.6% of the total population according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census of Costa Rica (INEC).

The above data highlight the urgent need for innovative housing options that provide quality personalized care and services for older adults.

Cohousing, or collaborative housing, emerges as a valuable solution to meet the needs of this growing population of older adults. This housing scheme fosters community, offering private housing with shared spaces to promote social interaction.

Data show that 85% of residents in cohousing communities report improved quality of life and satisfaction, while this housing model has been shown to reduce loneliness by 30% among older adults(Source: "Social Cohousing: An Innovative Approach for Seniors Living in Urban Environments," International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021).

Recent studies show that 85% of older adults prefer to age in their homes, but 75% will eventually need some type of assistance(Source: AARP, 2020). At Verdeza, we combine the best of both worlds, offering living spaces where residents can maintain their independence, but with access to assistance when they need it, providing a safe and nurturing environment.

Our design and services are designed to provide that feeling of home, offering medical care and assistance when needed. In addition, we create an environment where social interaction flourishes, promoting camaraderie and connection.
