Benefits of dance in older adulthood

Nowadays, aging is viewed from a positive perspective, in which older adults are consciously and successfully aging, taking part in social groups and engaging in activities that stimulate their body, mind and spirit.

Today we want to tell you about dance as an opportunity for recreation and physical activity.

Dance does not have to be complex, in fact, it is richer when it is spontaneous, when it connects with feelings. Hurtado and Lopera (2019) mention that "it can be affirmed that all people dance and have rhythm, because evidently there is in the human being a natural rhythm, the pulsations and beats of the heart mark in itself an internal rhythm, a tempo".

In addition, these authors mention that the objective of practicing dance at this stage of life is to gain control of one's own body through art.

The main benefits according to Gonzalez, Prato and Rodriguez (2017) are as follows:

-On a psychological level, dance decreases the level of stress and depression. In addition to stimulating attention and memory by observing movements, imitating them and remembering them later.

-Prevents cognitive impairment

On a physical level, it strengthens muscles, increases balance, flexibility and motor coordination. Reduces muscle and bone pain.

Viewing these three dimensions as a whole, it is evident that dance has a positive impact on the overall health of the older adult.

Finally, on a social level, this type of physical activity promotes social interaction, self-esteem, communication and reduces the perception of loneliness.
