Tips for deciding on a senior living community.

We know that deciding on a senior living community can produce many questions, concerns and doubts. That is why we have prepared this section as a guide to get all the information you need to make the best decision.

 

Please do not hesitate to contact us, our staff will gladly answer any questions you may have and provide you with additional information about the services offered by Verdeza. 

On the guided visit or tour, don't forget to ask:

  • Do you have nursing staff 24 hours a day?
  • Are the personnel trained?
  • Do they receive ongoing training?
  • How many attendings and nurses are there per number of residents?
  • Is an employment background check performed?

Food Service

  • Do you offer three high-quality, nutritionally balanced meals a day, seven days a week?
  • Are morning and afternoon snacks included?
  • Do you have a nutritionist at the residence?
  • Is there a menu with a variety of options for each meal?
  • Are there special diets if required?
  • Request a sample menu.

Activities

  • Are there scheduled activities, physical activities, social events and outings?
  • Is there a coordinator specifically for community activities?
  • Request a calendar of activities.

Transportation

  • Is transportation available for shopping or medical care?
  • Is it available seven days a week?
  • Is there any cost involved?
  • Are they accompanied by trained personnel?

Facilities

  • Is the building well lit, clean and free of unpleasant odors?
  • Are the spaces adapted for wheelchairs and walkers?
  • Are there elevators?
  • Do you have emergency exits and an evacuation plan?
  • Does a stretcher fit in the elevator?
  • Where does the move take place?
  • Are there assigned parking spaces?

Contracts and costs

  • Is the apartment rented or purchased?
  • Find out about the initial costs: membership fee, security deposit, monthly fee.
  • What are the services included in the monthly fees?
  • Can optional services be contracted for additional charges?
  • For how long should the contract be signed, what are the termination clauses?

Permits

  • Make sure the community has permits from the Ministry of Health and the Municipality to provide the care you need.

Memory floor

  • Does the community have a specialized program for residents with memory loss?
  • Is your staff trained to care for people with dementia?
  • Is there a special area floor with protection and supervision conditions for residents
    with dementia?
